“Mapping the City”

This year’s participation of the Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki in the 9th Art Thessaloniki focuses on the “City” as a field of lived experience, memory, and visual representation. Through a selection of paintings and photographs from its permanent collection, multiple artistic “depictions” of the urban landscape are highlighted.

The city is approached at times as an architectural structure and spatial organization, at others as the setting of everyday life and human presence, and at others as a landscape reflecting the experiences and transformations of contemporary urban life. The works capture aspects of daily life, traces of human presence, and shifting images of public space, revealing the city as a complex site of both collective and individual experience.

The museological concept is transformed, through architectural and exhibition design, into a spatial experience, shaping the exhibition area as a route reminiscent of urban wandering. Visitors are invited to move through it as they would within a city, discovering different images, narratives, and artistic approaches to the urban landscape.

At the same time, the presentation functions as a conceptual continuation of the group exhibition “City,” presented during the same period at Casa Bianca, expanding the reflection on the urban environment through works from the Gallery’s permanent collection. In this way, the space becomes a condensed artistic experience of the city, where Art meets everyday life and the multiple facets of contemporary urban reality.
